Azumanga Daioh (あずまんが大王 Azumanga Daiō?, lit. “Great King Azumanga”) is a Japanese comedy manga by Kiyohiko Azuma. It was serialized by MediaWorks in the shōnen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh from 1999 to 2002 and collected in four bound volumes. In May 2009, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the manga, three additional chapters began serialization in Shogakukan’s Monthly Shōnen Sunday under the title Azumanga Daioh: Supplementary Lessons.

The manga is drawn in a series of vertical four-panel comic strips called yonkoma and depicts the lives of a group of girls during their three years as high-school classmates. The series has been praised for its humor driven by eccentric characters, and Kiyohiko Azuma acclaimed as a “master of the four-panel form,” for both his art style and comic timing.

It was adapted as an anime television series called Azumanga Daioh: the Animation by J.C.Staff, which aired from the week of April 8, 2002 until the week of September 30, 2002. It was broadcast on the TV Tokyo network and AT-X in five-minute segments every weekday, then rebroadcast as a 25-minute compilation that weekend, for a total of 130 five-minute segments collected in 26 episodes. The compilation episodes were released on DVD and Universal Media Discs (UMDs) by Starchild Records; the five-minute segments can be distinguished by their individual titles. Several soundtrack albums were released, as well as three Azumanga Daioh video games.

07-Ghost is a fantasy manga written and illustrated by Yuki Amemiya and Yukino Ichihara. It is set in a fantasy world with different laws, kingdoms, gods and magic. It is currently serialized in the Monthly Comic Zero Sum, a shōjo manga magazine published monthly by Ichijinsha. By January 2009, seven bound volumes had been released. The manga has been licensed by Go! Comi for release in North America.

07-Ghost has been adapted into a drama CD. In April 2009, an anime adaptation, produced by Studio DEEN, made its premier.

The manga also won a double-first prize in the 3rd Zero-Sum Comics Grand-Prix, meaning it was chosen for first place by both readers and editors, which is very rare.

Plot

Teito Klein is a former slave who now attends the Barsburg Empire’s military academy due to his ability to use Zaiphon, a type of supernatural power. The ability is rare and thus highly prized.

Teito is an amnesiac who frequently has frightening dreams. After a year at the academy, Teito prepares to take the notoriously difficult graduation exam. The night before the exam, Teito and his only friend, Mikage, swear they will never abandon each other if the other needs help. Both of them pass the exam. The next day, Teito hears people talking about him. Stopping to listen, he suddenly realizes that the speaker, Chief of Staff Ayanami, is the person who killed the familiar man in his dreams: his father, the king of the destroyed Raggs Kingdom. Teito is caught eavesdropping and tries to attack Ayanami but is quickly brought down by one of his subordinates and sent to prison. Mikage comes to help him escape, only to find that Teito has managed to fight past the guards by himself. The two flee the building but are cornered on a balcony. Teito pretends to hold Mikage hostage, threatening to kill him if the guards pursue him, thus making his escape, though he is wounded by a Zaiphon blast that Ayanami directs at him. Three bishops in the nearby 7th District discover the injured Teito and take him to a nearby church to recuperate. Because of the 7th District’s law of sanctuary, as long as Teito stays in the church, the army cannot arrest him.

In due time, it is discovered that Teito carries the Eye of Mikhail, a powerful talisman for which his home country, the Raggs Kingdom, was destroyed. This fact, as well as a fateful reunion, catapults Teito into a quest for revenge against the Barsburg Empire and for knowledge about his past. At the same time, his status as the bearer of the Eye of Mikhail throws him into the long-standing conflict between the evil Verloren and his enemies, the 07 Ghosts.

Konata is an intelligent, athletic girl but she’s a lazy student, mostly because of her obsession with manga and anime and her otaku lifestyle. This is an unconventional, slice-of-life show based on a 4-panel comic strip manga that depicts the daily life of easygoing Japanese high school girls in a very amusing way.

Buso Renkin (武装錬金, Busō Renkin?, lit. “Arms Alchemy”) is a manga series written and drawn by Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Rurouni Kenshin. Buso Renkin was serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen magazine, Weekly Shōnen Jump from June 2003 to 2005, ending at 80 chapters. The individual chapters were collected by Shueisha into 10 tankōbon volumes which were released between January 5, 2004 and April 4, 2006. The series has been licensed by VIZ Media for US release and has been adapted into an anime by Xebec, which finished its run in Japan with a total of 26 episodes. There are also two drama CDs as well as a novel based on the series.

On April 27, 2009, the series made its North American television debut on the FUNimation Channel.

Plot

The story begins when high school student Kazuki Muto (武藤カズキ, Mutō Kazuki?) is killed one night saving a mysterious girl from a monster, only to wake up in his school dorm, believing it to have been a dream. However, he soon finds out that dream wasn’t a dream at all when a giant serpentine monster attacks him and his sister. Tokiko Tsumura (津村斗貴子, Tsumura Tokiko?), the girl he saved, explains that the monster is a homunculus. Kazuki had been attacked and killed by it when rescuing Tokiko. However she, feeling responsible for him, revived him by placing a Kakugane medallion in his chest, serving as a replacement heart.

The Kakugane, as Tokiko explains, is an alchemical (alchemistic) device that, when activated, takes a certain form based on the Kakugane’s user, forming a unique Buso Renkin. The Buso Renkin is the only thing that can destroy a homunculus monster. Using this, Kazuki creates his own Buso Renkin, taking the form of a giant lance, later named ‘Sunlight Heart’. Along with Tokiko and her own Buso Renkin (the Valkyrie Skirt, an execution scythe), Kazuki joins the fight against the homunculi and their master.

Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒ Suzumiya Haruhi?) is the general name for a series of light novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito which were subsequently adapted into other media. The story follows the title character Haruhi Suzumiya, a high school girl who can unconsciously change reality, and her strange antics with her school club the SOS Brigade. She founded SOS to investigate any mysterious happenings. Haruhi forcibly drafts her cynical classmate Kyon who narrates the series, and similarly recruits three additional members into her club: the silent bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly “mysterious exchange student” Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, sent by their various organizations to observe her and hold her reality warping powers in check by maintaining the illusion of a normal life.

The first novel was published in Japan on June 6, 2003 by Kadokawa Shoten with nine individual novels published and a planned tenth as of April 1, 2007. The light novels have been adapted into four separate manga series, a television anime adaptation, two original net animations, an animated film and several video games. After the anime adaptation aired in 2006, publishing company Kadokawa Shoten received various offers for licensing both the novels and their various adaptations.

The novels are licensed for English language release in the United States by Little, Brown and Company, for young readers by Yen Press and the anime adaptation was licensed for North American distribution by Kadokawa Pictures USA division which then sublicensed production and distribution to Bandai Entertainment.

CHARACTERS

Haruhi Suzumiya is the title character and leader of the SOS Brigade, whose energetic and eccentric character proves to be the driving force for the series. She has a mind for adventure which often leads her subordinates to be swept into her plans. While being smart, beautiful and energetic Haruhi was eyed as an oddball ever since middle school: she had set all the desks from her classroom out into the hallway, painted stars on the roofs, and even painted a huge hieroglyph out on the school field. Haruhi cannot stand boredom so she comes up with various activities for the SOS Brigade, making them participate whether they like it or not. In the 6th grade Haruhi felt she was no longer special after going to a baseball game and realizing she was one in a sea of people. After that she set out to make her life interesting and unique. What Haruhi does not know is that she has an outstanding power to change the environment around her as she pleases, and by subconsciously using it she gathers Mikuru Asahina, Itsuki Koizumi, and Yuki Nagato into one place, the SOS Brigade.

Kyon: Kyon is a student who unintentionally runs into Haruhi and is the only normal human in the SOS Brigade. Even though Haruhi is the title character, the story is told through Kyon’s viewpoint. Through narration and dialogue he provides his insight, perspective, and opinions on events. Kyon is often annoyed by Haruhi’s demands, but also thinks that a world without Haruhi would be uninteresting. Kyon is also “John Smith” from Haruhi’s earlier memories, and was the one who painted the hieroglyph in the field.

Yuki Nagato: Yuki is a bibliophile humanoid interface, created by Data Integration Thought Entity, whose responsibilities involve monitoring Haruhi and the investigation of an unexplained “explosion of data” three years prior to the present story. She possesses an ability to manipulate her surrounding environment, or “data” as quoted by her. Yuki is very quiet but can speak at length when it has to do with her mission or a problem that has arisen. While she always seems to be engrossed in her reading, she comments that she is only relatively interested in them. Yuki gives hints and aid to Kyon throughout the series. She almost never shows any emotions, but there are times when she shows interest in certain things, such as programming computer games and playing them, as well as reading. It is revealed in The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi film that she does develop emotions. In her context, developing emotions is like accumulating error data which will cause a bug to trigger anomalous behavior. The unpleasant emotions developed throughout the series (caused by the people around her) makes her wish for a normal world, whereby she finally takes action in the film.

Mikuru Asahina: Mikuru is a time traveler from the distant future who is assigned to investigate the reason behind the inability to travel to any point in time before three years prior to the present story. Mikuru is a soft-spoken girl who almost always willingly follows Haruhi’s demands. She is the lowest in her Time Traveler’s Committee. She often tries to explain what is going on, but will heavily censor it by saying “classified information”. Haruhi loves dressing up Mikuru in various (sometimes embarrassing) outfits, claiming that she is the “mascot” of the SOS Brigade. Kyon appears to have a bit of a crush on her, and Haruhi is quite jealous of her and Kyon’s relationship.

Itsuki Koizumi: Itsuki is an esper who, like the other members of “The Agency”, suddenly acquired the power to explore the “Closed Space” and combat Celestials three years prior to the present story. He is fairly carefree and can be found always smiling. However, Kyon always seems to be annoyed by him, and in the light novels expresses his urges to want to hit him. Itsuki brings up many points that have multiple sides, and even explains to Kyon that Mikuru, or anyone, could possibly be putting up a fake personality and deceiving everyone.
